What is a Freelance Writer?
A freelance writer is someone who is given six days to write an article and spends the first five researching the subject.
A freelance writer is someone with an insatiable curiosity for learning.
A freelance writer understands that selling is about helping people make informed decisions.
A freelance writer does what's best for the client, the project, the brand.
Does that sound like someone you want to hire?
Does that sound like you?
How To Become a Freelance Writer
I always thought there was a process to it, like you follow a recipe, give it time, and then when you pull yourself out of the oven you're a freelance writer.
Not so. But you do have to pull yourself out of the oven.
To become a freelance writer, you simply decide to sail in that direction and you'll know when you get there.
It is both that simple, and not that easy.
How to Hire a Freelance Writer
Tell someone what writing you need done and offer to pay them for it.
No but seriously, the best place to find freelance writers (in my opinion) is on LinkedIn.
You can usually get someone in your network, if not a stranger, to recommend a good fit freelance writer. There are all kinds of skill levels on LinkedIn, from hungry and talented recent college grads who can be affordable and still provide good work, to seasoned professional freelance writers who are worth every penny of their rate.
Job boards like problogger.com charge a fee to have your job posting to find freelance writers. You can find decent freelancers for somewhat competitive rates here too, but expect a lot of responses.
It's Easy To Transition
When you find a freelance writer you like on LinkedIn or from any sort of network, your business relationship can evolve organically. You can absolutely find great writers that you want to continue working with on content mill sites, but you'd be violating their terms and conditions if you solicit that freelance writer off the site.
Why Hire a Freelance Writer
Efficiency. Hiring a freelance writer is all about saving time and money for things that need to be done for your business (like launching a blog) while also getting a good return on investment.
Hire a Freelance Writer to Save Money
Without running too many numbers, it's safe to say hiring a freelancer is much more cost-effective than hiring a full-time employee who needs all those benefits and unemployment insurance and a salary and raises and... yeah.
Hire a Freelance Writer to Save Time
You probably didn't go into business to write blogs, so obviously hiring someone else to do them for you would free up time in your schedule to do more enjoyable things like not writing blogs.
But if you're a DIYer like I am... let me reassure you that you absolutely could write blogs yourself. And you could even write them better than me.
But that's going to require more than a decade of studying including a college degree, countless hours of practice, projects, workshops, books, webinars, youtube channels, student newspapers, more books, more practice, real newspapers, clients, more clients, looking for clients, existential crises, more practice, more books...
That's just scratching the surface honestly.
It's taken a long time and a lot of effort to learn how to do what I do.
It's not just the time I will spend on your project, it's the time I spent learning how and the time I spend everyday improving my craft.
Hire a Freelance Writer to Do the Job Well
A good freelance writer will bring more to the table than just throwing sentences together. For example, I have a background in
Content writing (writing that informs)
Copywriting (writing that sells)
SEO (writing that search engines can find)
Comedic writing (writing that is funny)
Fiction writing (writing an imagined story)
Journalism (researching and writing catchy stories that are real)
Not all freelance writers have that kind of experience, and that kind of experience does not necessarily make a good freelance writer. Everyone brings something unique to the table, and everyone develops their craft differently.
Hire a Freelance Writer to Get a Return on Investment
Maybe this is getting more into consulting territory, but I see part of my job as a freelance writer to write something that ultimately leads to sales. Helping customers make informed decisions, making them laugh, providing inspiration, and telling compelling stories are all integral parts of that goal.
TLDR: What is a Freelance Writer?
A freelance writer is an independent writer for hire, often for web content such as blogs, articles, social media, or website copy. Anyone can become a freelance writer with training and the best place to hire a freelance writer in my opinion is LinkedIn.
